Amanda Swart is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at Stellenbosch University. She teaches undergraduate courses while also managing her research program and her postgraduate students. Professor Swart has been investigating the influence of natural products on the adrenal cytochrome P450 enzymes (P450s) for a number of years. These enzymes catalyze the biosynthesis of steroid hormones – glucocorticoids (cortisol and corticosterone), mineralocorticoids (aldosterone) and adrenal androgens (androstenedione). She has devoted years to studying adrenal steroid hormone biosynthesis and the structure/function aspects of the P450s, using the baboon enzymes as her model system, linking these to the human P450s for comparative analyses.
Running alongside her interest in steroid hormones is her interest in natural plant products. The P450s are enzymes ideally suited to studies investigating the bioactivity of plant extracts and secondary plant metabolites. Her recent publications into the influence of Rooibos, a herbal tea, on cortisol biosynthesis, supports it’s potential as a functional food and has led to much public interest, locally and internationally

benzodiazapines: how they work and some of the benefits
side-effects, tolerance facts and withdrawal effects

Catherine M. Pittman, Ph.D., HSPP, is a licensed clinical psychologist, psychology professor, and chair of the Psychology Department at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana. As a practicing clinical psychologist at Roseland Counseling, Dr. Pittman also provides psychotherapy, most frequently working with those coping with anxiety, depression, and PTSD. She also is experienced in neuropsychological rehabilitation, and works with individuals who have experienced brain injuries or strokes. Along with Elizabeth Karle, she authored Extinguishing Anxiety, a book that assists individuals in overcoming the difficulties associated with anxiety disorders. The two are currently writing a second book, Rewire Your Anxious Brain, for New Harbinger.
Dr. Pittman practices evidence-based psychotherapy, which means that she uses approaches that have been studied and shown to be effective. Her focus is on understanding how the natural processes of the brain and body can be changed in order to improve one’s life. After 20 years of experience in Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Neuropsychology, Dr. Pittman has acquired a substantial amount of knowledge about how to help people change their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. One of her goals in therapy is to help individuals understand what needs to be changed in the brain to help them accomplish the changes they seek. She is continually amazed by the fact that the brain is capable of tremendous growth, change, and healing, no matter what the person’s age, and knows that, while medication can be useful, it is not always necessary to promote change. Her research on benzodiazepines was inspired by her growing awareness of individuals with anxiety disorders who were relying on these medications to cope with anxiety, and the lack of resources available for those who were interested in using alternate methods but had difficulty stopping the use of benzodiazepines.

Thank you!” ~ Jen
“The choice of speakers was really excellent, as was the whole format. I learned a great deal. I would also add that Trudy exudes both warmth and conviction, and I have looked forward every day to hearing her encouraging voice and learning from the provocative questions she asked each speaker. Sharon Heller, PhD is an author, developmental psychologist and college professor specializing in how poor nutrition, internal and external toxicity, drugs, and cranial/sacral misalignment create sensory processing problems, anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems, and on how to heal holistically. She received her master’s degree from the University of Chicago and PhD from Loyola University of Chicago.
Sharon is the author of Anxiety: Hidden Causes: Why your anxiety may not be “all in your head” but from something physical ;Too Loud, Too Bright, Too Fast, Too Tight: What to Do If You Are Sensory Defensive in an Overstimulating World and Uptight & Off Center: How Sensory Processing Disorder Throws Adults off Balance & How to Create Stability . You can learn more at www.sharonheller.net
For many years Sharon suffered debilitating sensory defensiveness, head pressure, head fog, poor balance, visual processing problems, weakness, digestive problems and fatigue for which conventional medicine could offer neither diagnosis nor treatment. She was told and assumed that her problems were largely from anxiety. Psychotropic medication had a minor impact in helping to reduce some distress but, suffering side effects, she promptly stopped. Something was very wrong but what?
Exploring various holistic modalities, she slowly discovered the causes and treatments for her symptoms. Sequelae from head trauma suffered twenty years earlier drove her neurological symptoms, while Epstein Barr virus, Candida overgrowth, mercury poisoning and adrenal exhaustion drove her physical symptoms, all of which were compounded by unrelenting distress. Neurocranial restructuring, biocranial therapy, magnetic resonance therapy, acupuncture and other alternative therapies, along with a raw food diet, detoxification, yoga, qi gong, and painting (see www.anya.artspan.com) helped to heal and transform her life. You too can heal!

What is integrated medicine
What are the complexities of building an integrated medical practice
Incorporating neuro-nutrition/amino acids into a psychotherapy practice
Case studies using neuro-nutrition/amino acids and psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, panic attacks, family dysfunction, chronic pain, gut distress
Rebecca Robb, PsyD is a clinical psychologist with 40 years of experience in the field of mental health. She holds a master and a doctorate from the School of Professional Psychology at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. Her undergraduate degree is from George Fox University, Newberg, Oregon.
Dr. Robb’s work in the community mental health system before and after graduate school prompted many questions about traditional psychiatric pharmaceutical interventions. Her dissertation explored the efficacy of dietary interventions for children with AD/HD. In 2001 she co-founded an integrative health care practice. Her practice at Integrative Primary Care Associates, in Portland, Oregon is based on her firmly held belief that vibrant mental health is directly related to proper nourishment of the body, mind and spirit. She recognizes the reciprocal and dynamic influence of biological, psychological and social forces in illness and health.
Dr. Robb’s ongoing investigation of emerging treatment practices led to an examination of neuro-nutrition and diet. These practices proved to be a remarkably valuable complement to insight-oriented psychotherapy. Further study at the Neuro-Nutrient Training Institute, founded by Julia Ross, MA and author of best-sellers The Mood Cure and The Diet Cure established a foundation for her current protocols. She continually strives to expand her understanding and effectiveness through study and collaboration with multi-disciplinary colleagues.

Yasmina Ykelenstam, the Low Histamine Chef, is a former CNN/BBC journalist and luxury brand marketing professional turned nutrition/wellness blogger and cookbook author after using a high-nutrient, gluten-free, histamine-balanced “flexitarian” diet to heal a chronic inflammatory condition. Due to her investigative skills and her ability to publicize information online, her reporting on the topics of histamine intolerance and mast cell activation (MCA) syndrome has earned her the respect of an international community of physicians and researchers. Yasmina now has thousands of devoted, grateful readers whose lives she positively impacted by putting a name to their pain and advising them on how to eat and live so they can heal, recover, and move forward without discomfort.
A Dutch-Lebanese citizen, Yasmina grew up in the United States and Europe. Her Dutch father was a vice-president for Sheraton and developed new hotels. Her Lebanese mother was a journalist. The family resided in New York, Spain, London, Paris, and Beirut. She holds a B.A from Trinity University in Washington, D.C., and is currently studying nutrition with Joel Fuhrman, M.D., author of Super Immunity.
Yasmina has over ten years of experience in research and international news production for programs that include CBS’s 60 Minutes, where she began as an intern, and CNN’s Inside Politics andbusiness news division. After 9/11, she was pulled into the general news division at CNN, where she worked with Wolf Blitzer, John Snow, Christiane Amanpour, Richard Quest, and Hala Gorani. She was part of a team that received the Edward R. Murrow Award for coverage of the 2006 Lebanon War with Israel. After CNN, she did field reporting from Baghdad for Fox New and the BBC. The journalistic standards of her blog are of the highest order due to her training.
While residing in London and bedridden (2008–2010), she worked producing and copywriting promotional campaigns for the Nobrand Agency, an award-winning digital consultancy working with luxury brands. Her accounts included the Doha Tribeca Film Festival (NYC), Nokia, Mercedes-Benz, Bischoff/Weiss Gallery (London), Elie Saab, Roberto Cavalli, and the Oscar-winning 2007 documentary No End in Sight.
After her thirty-year struggle to identify the source of her diverse constellation of physical, emotional, and mental symptoms began to come to an end in 2010 with the recognition that her histamine levels were involved—a discovery that ultimately led to a valid diagnosis of MCA syndrome—Yasmina devoted herself full time to her recovery. She subsequently became a full-time blogger and health reporter, successfully publishing nine ebooks (PDFs) on low-histamine cooking and lifestyle.
Not only does Yasmina back up each claim on her website and blog with numerous studies, she makes sure to put her journalism background to good use by interviewing leading medical experts, bestselling authors, and healers. She and her blog have been featured in articles appearing in Huffington Post, BBC News, The (London) Times, First for Women, Buzz Feed, Aftonbladet (Sweden), Health Monitor, and GreenMedInfo.
Yasmina currently resides in London, England, and Marbella, Spain, and also spends frequent intervals visiting New York City.

Lebby has a degree in home economics and minor in marketing. Her education and personal experiences have equipped her with extensive knowledge that she draws on to work with clients to help them make lifestyle changes that produce real and lasting results. Lebby suffered from many food allergies and illnesses that conventional medicine couldn’t diagnose or cure; at one point, becoming very ill and needing to be hospitalized. After many years and many thousands of dollars, she took her health into her own hands. Lebby took Hippocrates at his word and began to “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” She discovered that it was more about what was wrong with the foods she was eating, not what was wrong with her body. The more she studied health, food, and nutrition, the more passionate she became about sharing with others the power of holistic health and the power that “real food” has in nourishing and healing our bodies, minds and spirits. Lebby is the founder of Fooducation® and sprouted a grassroots movement teaching others how food affects our health and our world. In collaboration with The Historic Cine El Rey Theatre Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) organization, Lebby started a community effort to help improve the health and wellness of communities via the Fooducation® Movie Series that works towards “Changing lives one movie at a time.”™ You can read more about Lebby and her work at thefooducator.com and getfooducated.org
Dan Stradford, Safe Harbor President
My Anxiety Story and the Message of Hope We Offer
Safe Harbor /Alternative Mental Health: a message of hope and practitioner resources
His low zinc, histadelia and anxiety
Margot Kidder’s story with amino acids and bipolar disorder
Success with social anxiety/pyroluria
His greatest piece of wisdom from an elderly African priest
Safe Harbor is the world’s largest site on non-drug approaches for mental health. Thousands of people around the world have recovered from mental disorders and now enjoy the simple pleasures of a drug-free life. Most were told this was impossible. Yet we hear from these individuals regularly. Many others have been able to significantly reduce their dependency on psychiatric medication. Commonly these people find that underlying their “mental” disorders are medical problems, allergies, toxic conditions, nutritional imbalances, poor diets, lack of exercise, or other treatable physical conditions. Find out more at alternativementalhealth.com
Safe Harbor is a nonprofit corporation, founded in 1998 and based in Los Angeles, California.
In 1958, when Safe Harbor founder Dan Stradford was four years old, his father, William Stradford, vanished into a mental hospital with a “nervous breakdown.” After receiving a series of shock treatments and potent drugs, William Stradford returned home a broken man. His memory was gone, his personality had deteriorated, and he could scarcely hold a job.
William Stradford – a once-vibrant, personable man – never recovered. The family, with 4 children, plummeted into poverty and fell apart. All the children except for Dan ended up in children’s homes.
From a very early age, Dan Stradford felt there had to be safer, more effective alternatives for treating the mentally disturbed. In 1998 he formed the groundwork for the Safe Harbor Project to help others avoid the tragedy he witnessed growing up.
Finding many like-minded people inside and outside the medical community, Dan requested their help as board members and advisors and the Safe Harbor Project was born.
In addition to being the Safe Harbor President, Dan Stradford is a semi-retired corporate executive, a naturalist, writer and editor.

What Listeners Had to Say about the Anxiety Summit
“I am going to miss these interviews when they are over!! They are like a bouquet of hope:)” ~ Karen
“I have been riveted this entire week by the Anxiety Summit This whole week has been amazing! I have neglected all household responsibilities, much to the chagrin of those I care for, and it has been worth every second! Each interview has been fascinating, entertaining and nutrient-dense!
The interactive format was really nice–she never dominated the conversation, but often had something insightful to add to the guest’s comments.”
“I am a Naturopath/Nutritionist, specializing in the emotional/mental ramifications of Lyme Disease, and constantly attend webinars on numerous topics. I’m so impressed with Trudy’s knowledge and ability to ask the right questions and the webinar in general is fantastic… one of the best I’ve attended. Thank you, Trudy!” ~ Dr. Elle Guastella
“Fantastic work and what a selection of awe inspiring professionals leading the way forward in thinking about anxiety, stress and the biochemical dance that exists within everyone of us. Well done.”
“I’m so impressed with how extremely knowledgable, positive and engaging our speakers are. Your questioning is great and everyone’s such a good teacher, summarizing while adding tons of details and personal stories helps with comprehension of this amazing wealth of work. I am more than motivated to give up sugar and gluten and try some supplements while hopefully modeling for my children in their 20s how to be healthier and wiser. Thank you!”
